Special Operations Journal Archive

Special Operations Journal (SOJ) was one of the first professional journals dedicated to advancing scholarship on the nature, conduct, and sources of success in special operations. From 2015 to 2021, it served as a bridge between academia, the military, and the special operations community both in the United States and abroad, publishing rigorous, policy-relevant research spanning tactics, strategy, planning, and lessons learned. SOJ quickly became a leading venue for peer-reviewed research on special operations forces and irregular conflict.

In 2024, the journal’s editorial team, led by Dr. Chris Marsh and Dr. James Kiras, brought its legacy to Arizona State University, where it was relaunched under a new name and expanded mission: Inter Populum: The Journal of Irregular Warfare & Special Operations. This transition reflects the evolving character of modern conflict, broadening the journal’s focus beyond special operations to encompass the wider dynamics of irregular warfare and strategic competition.
